WORKING WITH THE ECHOES OF TRAUMA IN COUPLES THERAPY FROM AN EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED THERAPY , SUE JOHNSON, PERSPECTIVE
with Dr. T. Leanne Campbell & Kathryn Rheem, Ed.D., LMF

WHY ATTEND?

Emotional dysregulation, a hallmark of trauma, scrambles communication, blocks intimacy, and amplifies distress. Working with, privileging and sharing fears often feels like being on a roller coaster in the dark but it’s exactly what is needed to restore connection with self and partner. This two-day workshop is designed to help individuals understand the potential impact of trauma and loss from an attachment perspective, and how to work intrapsychically and interpersonally to shift partners toward increased closeness and trauma resolution.  Using video demonstrations, in addition to didactic instruction and experiential exercises, key related objectives will be to assist clinicians in assessing and identifying various personal and relationship factors that impact clinical decision-making with respect to therapeutic pacing, and developing therapeutic skills necessary to effectively apply EFT and facilitate sustainable change, both personally and interpersonally.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This course is beneficial for Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Mental Health counsellors, Clinical Social workers, Marriage and Family therapists, Addictions Counsellors, Nurses and people working in trauma related fields.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the potential impact of trauma from an attachment perspective, with attention to developmental factors, and with regard to mental health assessment and intervention more generally.

  • Understand how to work with trauma with couples, with attention to heightening and/or containing emotion, and working within the ‘therapeutic window’ both individually and relationally.

  • How to work with emotion ‘moment-to-moment’ with the overall goal of facilitating bonding and trauma resolution, and positively and durably shifting affect regulation capacities, as well as models of self and other.
